Hummingbirds

The hummingbirds have been very busy at my feeder. Yesterday during hirricane Earl, when I expected they would stay sheltered and safe in their nests, they were busily out and about. There are 2 females who consistently visit. It's like they are the best of friends......as one feeds, the other may sit on top of the pole that holds the feeder, as if guarding their territory. Then they depart and it's like they are doing a dance in the air, twittering at each other, flying together, slowly up high till you can hardly see them and then rapidly descending. They then fly from flower to flower, gracefully through the arbor, over to the maple trees or monutain ash and then back to the feeder. Late yesterday afternoon brought a 3rd, a male. Today I put out a second feeder, just off the deck and within 20 min. one was quietly perched and feeding. Fall is close at hand and by next month thay will be making their long journey south. They are very interesting to watch and it is most amazing that they will find their way back in the spring to the same feeders.
